10 Things to Know About WWI!
Here are some interesting facts you didn't know about the first world war!
1. Germans were the first to utilize flamethrowers, which could fire jets of flame up to 130 feet, in their fighting.
2. Unlike previous wars, almost 2/3 of military deaths (instead of disease) occured in battle.
3. "Little Willie" was the first prototype tank that was built in 1915, carried a crew of three people, traveling at an average speed of 3 mph.
4. Dogs were used as messengers, carrrying orders to the front lines in capsules attached to them. They also laid down telegraph wires.
5.Due to the unpredictableness of mustard gas, it was not used again in WWII.
6.After WWI, Poland, Latvia, Estonia, Finland and Lithuania became independent nations.
7. Tanks were first known as "landships." The British decided to use the code name, "Tanks" to disguise them as water storage tanks.
8. The largest army in the war was Russia. They mobilized 12 million troops, however more than 3/4 were killed, wounded or M.I.A.
9. When the war first began, British soldiers went to battle with only a cloth cap for protection.
10. Due to the food shortages during the war, Britain banned throwing rice at weddings and feeding pidgeons to conserve food.
